Our fake thanksgiving dinner/fake birthday celebration

 

A couple of weeks ago, before all the shit stuff happened, my friends decided that, being English majors and all, it'd be nice to embrace another foreign tradition and have a fake thanksgiving dinner. I obviously thought this was a great idea, but when I entered Esther's living room I found it decorated with these funny looking horses and a banner that said "happy birthday".

For a moment I stood there thinking. "Wait a minute. Is it someone's birthday today? Whose? Oh crap, I missed it and I'm gonna look like a shit friend", but then I realised it was my birthday that we were celebrating. And this was my first ever surprise party.

We ate some pretty looking food. And the karma was so good we got a heart-shaped piece of bread.

The mood was so good that Lou Lou left us a little present on a napkin, and we moved on to the desserts. Yes, plural.

It was Esther's first time, but Lou Lou seemed to be an expert. Although Esther was an expert in the cheesecake field (check her blog soon for the recipe!)

And in case this wasn't enough, we had hot chocolate on a stick. YES! ON A STICK! I was excited. We were all excited. Hell, I am STILL excited. This should be so easy to make with funky shaped chocolate molds, and it would make a great little gift. Bea was excited too.

Here's how this chocolate works: You add hot water,

Do disgusting things with it while it melts, comparing it with poo as many times as possible.

And stare in wonder when you realise your mug matches your macaron AND that one can be balanced on the other.

It was pretty nice, but by the time we were done we were all so full that we needed a digestive aid, so Esther went back in time to the 60s and got out this bottle.

A wonderful evening was had by all. A lot of pressure has been placed upon my shoulders to post my presents, but I think this post is a bit too much for now, so check back soon to see what I got.

Golden Globes 2011

Every afternoon I check the internet following the same steps: Facebook, Gmail, Hotmail, this blog and www.imdb.com. For those who don't know this webpage yet, I allow you to stop reading my blog and go to take a look at it. It's the biggest movie and series database and there you can find every information you need about who was in which picture among other things that can be useful in some arguments with your friends. But it also has news and today I want to share with you the list of the nominees to the Golden Globes '11. And, of course, I have a say here!

As it was suppossed to be, Inception and The Social Network can win in the category of Best Motion Picture- Drama. I don't have a say about the others 'cause they haven't been released in Spain but I heard really good things about Natalie Portman and The Black Swan. However, in the category of Musical or Comedy we find Cher's Burlesque. This is what in Spanish we could call a "burla", a huge joke. Who put at the same level this and Alice in Wonderland?

Jesse Eisenberg, the fictional creator of Facebook is nominated to best actor in a leading role as well as some repeaters like Colin Firth, Kevin Spacey, Halle Berry, Nicole Kidman...and Johnny Depp, who is nominated twice as much! (Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist)

 Next thing, I'm going to be a bit cruel, but I'm sure some people already thought this. Michael Douglas is nominated so, let's pray to avoid this to be a posthumous prize.

Christopher Nolan, director and writer of  Inception, could have a triplet which, to be honest, I'd love to happen.

Best animated film: I know, everybody does, that Toy Story 3 is going to win, though I strongly recommend Tangled, in the style of classical Disney movies.

In best foreign language film, my background forces me to desire Biutiful to win. I haven't seen it yet but being an Iñarritu's movie, it'll be great.

TV department.-

I'm so happy for so many people here! Though my heart is divided in the category of best tv series-drama. How can I choose between Mad Men, Dexter and Boardwalk Empire?

In the musical or comedy category I have a preference for The Big Bang Theory but, to be honest, Modern Family should get this one. 

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television; as a fan I want The Pillars of the Earth to win, but as an objective person, I guess The Pacific deserves it. If the last one finally wins, I think Ian McShane, aka Waleran Bigod, should be the best actor in mini-series. Going on with the actors, the male category for drama is full of great performances:

Finally, after falling in love with Christina Hendricks, who is not nominated, by the way (angry mode on), I discovered a beautiful and delicate creature who is Margaret Schroeder, played by Kelly Macdonald in Boardwalk Empire, so she's my bet for best actress in a supporting role. 

Departing from the Golden Globes but going on with the series theme, I have to announce that Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter and Debra Morgan in fiction) are getting divorced. A big shock for a Dexter fan like me who just yesterday found out that this season's over... sigh...

My Favourite Book

I've never read anything from Stephen King...apart from what I consider to be my favourite book. I know many of you would kill me for this, but before cleaning your guns I'll tell you that this book has nothing to do with the rest of King's horror fiction. The Eyes of the Dragon was published in 1987, the year I was born, so I guess it's not coincidence I like it. The Spanish edition was given to me by one of my mom's friends and years later I bought it in English. I've read it several times and it brings me good memories cause I used to re-read it every spring for several consecutive years while eating medlar sitting in my terrace.
It was written for his children so even the style is different. The Eyes of the Dragon tells the story of the kingdom of Delain in the style of Arthur's tales, with magicians, treachery, suffering and love. If you want to know more about the plot click here and if you want some spoilers, here.
I strongly recommend it if you feel like having a good time. I even dare to say that you'll fall in love not only with the book but also with the characters, particularly Peter and his dollhouse.

Necropolis (Dead People I'd Like to...Meet)

This thought came to my mind yesterday when I found something about River Phoenix. Then I just remembered how much I liked him in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. If we are attracted to people we can't get like models, actors or singers, it shouldn't be strange to us being attracted to dead people. I already had this conversation weeks ago with my friends Lou, Bea and Andrea and some extraordinary names emerged like John Keats or Martin Luther King Jr.

"Death by Chocolate" or my first cake

Remember this recipes book I ordered? Yesterday it was my firts attempt in the magical world of desserts (given the name of my blog that's ironic, I know). I tried with the page 265, a good-looking cake known as DEATH BY CHOCOLATE. It was really death, not only making it -I spent half an hour trying to make the eggs with the sugar grow- but also eating it. It was deathly tasty! In fact, if you don't like chocolate don't even try it, cause it's pure cocoa, and even if you like it, I recommend not to eat a big piece unless you want to feel your arteries obstructing.

Anyway, I encourage you to print the recipe -you can find a photo below, I'm too lazy to copy- and bake it. Hope the result looks more or less like mine.

Gingers are sexy (more often than not)

Yes, I am a fake ginger but this is just the reflection of the hair I should have born with. If someday I'm single again (something I don't want to, to be honest, I'm happily married) I just have two wishes: fuck a ginger and fuck an African-American. Well, if I also can have a relationship with them it's ok. LOL. To be honest, I saw last year the conjuction of these two things and I came to an agreement with myself: ginger black guy: not working.
The thing is I'm really obsessed with gingers, a passion I share with my friend Lou (she really likes those guys who have red beard). So after being blonde, black hair, and several more colours you don't want to know, one day I tried orange AND I LOVED IT. So here I am, ginger and proud. I leave here a list of ginger celebs just to know your opinion about them and if you have some other suggestion, please, tell me, it's always good to meet hot gingers.
